Become an escort for exceptional transport

Summary

There are two types of accreditation for escorts:

  • Type 1: allows the escort of exceptional transport requiring only an accompanying vehicle;
  • Type 2: allows the escort of any exceptional transport (requiring several accompanying vehicles).

To become a certified escort:

  • Type 1: you must take a theoretical skills exam;
  • Type 2: you must take a theoretical skills exam AND complete an internship with an accredited escort company.

The internship

Anyone who has passed the theory exam must complete an internship with an accredited escort company to become a Type 2 escort.

This internship includes:

  1. five hours of observation in the driver's cabin of the exceptional vehicle during exceptional transport requiring an escort of at least two escort vehicles. The objectives of the observation are:
    1. to understand the difficulties involved in driving exceptional transport and perceive the various risks facing exceptional transport;
    2. to observe the different manoeuvres performed by the driver;
    3. to practise the driver's eye technique by taking into account the blind spots.
  2. Ten hours of actual practice as an escort during an exceptional transport requiring the accompaniment of at least two escort vehicles under the supervision of and alongside a guide escort;
  3. Over a total distance of 100 kilometres, excluding motorways and roads divided into four or more traffic lanes, of which at least two are reserved for each direction of traffic and where the maximum authorised speed is more than 70 km/h, the carrying out of route recognition for at least one exceptional transport requiring at least two escort vehicles.

Route recognition includes:

  1. preparation of the route;
  2. checking the presence of construction sites and obstacles;
  3. reconnaissance of the terrain with photos and measurements;
  4. checking the application file;
  5. writing additional notes for the driver and escorts of the convoy.

The trainee keeps a "progress of the internship" form which must be sent to the administration.

Until 1 October 2024, an exceptional transport escort who, before the entry into force of this decree, held a certificate of competence as a security agent - escort of exceptional transport, issued in accordance with Article 21bis of the Royal Decree of 21 December 2006 on the conditions for professional training and experience, the conditions for the psycho-technical examination for the exercise of a managerial or executive position in a security company or an internal security service and relating to the accreditation of training courses, may exchange it for a type 2 identification card, provided that they meet the conditions referred to in Article 3, 2° to 4° of the AGW of 8 September 2022 on the escorting of exceptional vehicles.

Procedure

Application for an identification card

The identification card is proof that you meet the requirements for being an escort for exceptional transport.

You can request your identification card via the application form. Documents should be sent by email to te@spw.wallonie.be.

Until 1 October 2024, escorts holding a security identification card issued by the FPS Interior can apply to exchange it via this form. The documents should be sent by email to te@spw.wallonie.be.
